Some direct quotes and some paraphrasing from a November 15, 1993 Detroit Free Press article by Patricia Anstett, Detroit Free Press Medical writer follow.
“Razor bumps are the only medical disorder where the most effective method of treatment is growing a beard,” says Dr. A. Melvin Alexander, a University of Maryland dermatologist who has studied the problem extensively.
Dr. Alexander testified for an Omaha pizza deliveryman who won the right to wear a beard at work. Dr. Alexander has been an expert witness for many men suing to remain bearded in their occupations. Other men ( often those in the military) required a doctors written verification to obtain exemptions from “no beard “policies.
“ Razor bumps — PFB – Pseudofolliculitis Barbee ( pronounced Sue-do-FO-Lick-U-Lie-Tis-Bar-bee) Is its technical name and it occurs in 45-83% of Black men who shave, “ also says Dr. Alexander.
A Black Detroit dermatologist, Dr. Lorna Thomas says, “ This is the number 1 complaint of males who go to dermatologists.” Dr. Alexander even goes further. He says PFB is “ the most common medical disorder in black males in America!”
Drs. Thomas and Alexander both say electric razors developed for black men don’t work; nor do straight-edged disposable razors.
Dr. Alexander says hair removal creams sometime work — but are time -consuming, smell bad, and sometimes causes skin irritations. Dr. Alexander adds that hair removal creams, and other products that may irritate the skin may also cause a darkening of the beard area ( an unacceptable consequence to many men sensitive about uneven skin color).
